Thesis Title: Syriac Christian influences in Islamic mysticism 7-8th century

About

Writing PhD thesis on Syrian Christian asceticism and interaction with early Sufi Muslim practice (as seen in Rabi'a and al-Hallaj, cf St. Isaac the Syrian, St. Ephrem the Syrian, Aphrahat). Also researching Stoic influence on Syriac monasticism, and Neo-Platonic themes in Christian mysticism, Evagrius, Ps.Dionysius, Bonaventure.

I am also a priest in the Antiochian Orthodox priest in Melbourne Australia, and President of the Melbourne Institute for Orthodox Christian Studies.

I have also been researching "resurrection asceticism" in St Aphrahat. He goes beyond the Greek authors and emphasises what I think is a strongly "realised eschatology" of lived resurrection, especially in relation to present virginity. This is most clearly seen in his expression (Syriac) "bnai qyama" which is often mistranslated as Sons of the Covenant but which I have overwhelming evidence should be "Sons of the resurrection".

I am Managing Editor of ERAS Journal. http://arts.monash.edu.au/publications/eras/
